ABOUT ME
Hi, I’m Jodie (she/her). I’m a clinical psychologist, Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician, and researcher, with a specific interest in eating, exercise, and body image concerns (you can read more about that here). I approach therapy with compassion, curiosity, authenticity, and, when appropriate, a bit of humour. I highly value people’s lived experience and believe this must be considered as a part of evidence-based treatment. Your story will always be heard and held with care.
Using a trauma-informed lens, I view people’s difficulties as an understandable response to life experiences (including societal issues), rather than a pathology or disorder. I am neurodiversity affirming, inclusive to LGBTQA+ and BIPOC folks, welcoming to all bodies, and culturally aware; I actively invite you to talk about how these aspects of your identity influence your life experiences and the therapy process.
In therapy, I draw on the concept that compassion is both turning towards suffering and a commitment to do something about it. This means I will hold space for you, validate, and deeply care, whilst also gently challenging and working with you to make changes that matter to you.
clinical interests and experience
I have a particular interest in supporting those who are experiencing a difficult relationship with eating, exercise, and/or body image. I am fiercely size inclusive and adopt a Health at Every Size® approach to my work. In addition to having worked with individual eating disorder clients in private, public, and university settings, I have:
Developed and ran an eating disorder group program at a private mental health hospital in Melbourne.
Facilitated eating disorder support groups and co-wrote a professional development training on eating disorders for fitness and exercise professionals at Eating Disorders Victoria.
Conducted research exploring the effects of viewing “fitspiration” on disordered eating related thoughts and behaviours and the relationship between emotions and binge eating.
Been a founder of Health at Every Size Australia (now Size Inclusive Health Australia)
I am also a qualified exercise physiologist and worked in the fitness and exercise industry for over 10 years. I draw on these qualifications and experience to enhance the care I provide to anyone struggling with exercise-related difficulties. I am particularly well-equipped to support exercise/fitness professionals who are experiencing their own eating, exercise, or body image difficulties.
